Defamation
Everyone has the right to protect their good name and reputation, something that may have been earned over many years and it is something that can easily damaged or lost overnight.
We live in a time where social media platforms have given people, anonymously or otherwise, the means to make statements or comments about a person that are false, misleading or untrue. Online commentators often think they can post or comment on matters without any consequences but statements which are false and injurious can result in significant awards of compensation to injured parties. Apologies and retractions can also be obtained as part of any successful defamation action.
If you feel you have been defamed and would like to talk to us about your case please contact our office and we can advise you on the merits of your case. Some key points to consider include:
- Was the defamatory statement written or spoken?
- Can you identify who made the defamatory statement, and if it was uttered, did any other parties witness it?
- When was the statement made as there are strict time limits which apply if you wish to bring a claim.
- Could the Defendant avail of one or more of the recognised defences which can apply in defamation actions.
- If successful, is the Defendant a person or entity that can pay you compensation or costs?
*In contentious business, a solicitor may not calculate fees or other charges as a percentage or proportion of any award or settlement.
